优素福·卡什的故事是一个经典的从一文不名到跻身富有阶层的移民故事，卡什出生于土耳其亚美尼亚，作为一个基督徒成长与穆斯林教统治的土耳其。14岁时，为了躲避恐怖的种族屠杀和追求自由，全家人除了背包一无长物，逃到叙利亚。年仅16岁时，卡什的父母送他到魁北克希尔布鲁克他的叔叔乔治·纳什，一个肖像摄影师哪里工作和生活。在发现了侄子的艺术天赋以后，纳什在1928年送20岁的卡什到波士顿，师从约翰·加伦，北美最顶尖的肖像摄影家之一。卡什有幸接触到的波士顿的权利和知名阶层，奠定了这个年轻人一生艺术生涯的基调。年轻、才华横溢、求知若渴，卡什到加拿大，在渥太华斯巴克街开了一个简陋的工作室。后来，卡什引起了当时的总理麦肯锡·金的注意，大力提携这个尚不知名的摄影师，介绍他给到访的权贵拍摄肖像。
作为最后的伟大肖像摄影家之一，渥太华的卡什后来几乎和他镜头下的传奇人物一样知名。在罗列了上世界最着名人物的最新一版“名人录”里，卡什是位列100以内的唯一加拿大人，更有意思的是卡什曾为其中的51人拍摄过肖像。
